Huntsville, AL - Former Huntsville mayor Loretta Spencer ended weeks of rumor on Friday when she sent out a press release announcing her return to the political arena.
Spencer served as mayor for three terms, from 1996-2008. Her defeat by less than 4000 votes at the hands of real estate developer Tommy Battle shocked many around town. Now, she wants another chance. Monday morning, she'll make her intentions official.
"Simply put, I am running because I love Huntsville. If we have grounded, steady direction, incredible opportunity and potential exist for our city on the horizon. Solidified by positive results, my leadership skills make me poised to most effectively steer the ship for the next four years," Ms. Spencer said.
At this point, Spencer and Battle are the only two candidates who've announced interest in the position. The municipal elections in Alabama will be held August 28th.
Update : 4:19 p.m. - corrected typo in 2nd paragraph. "4,000" votes, not "400"
