Greg Kamback is a Huntsville architect who is donating his time to help finalize plans for an
April 27th tornado memorial in DeKalb county.
“This is the kind of work that has its own rewards because it means so much to so many people who suffered so much up here,” Kamback said.
Saturday was the official ground breaking ceremony at the DeKalb County Schools Coliseum.
Dozens attended, including those who lost loved ones.
“April 27’Th was a tragic day and this was an opportunity to come honor the victims and mourn for the families and for their sacrifice. But it is also a day to celebrate life and celebrate the fact that we as a community are rebuilding and moving forward,” event attendee, Shaunathan Bell said.
“I think it is going to be a really important monument. The people who are living now will never forget what happened on that day. And I think the memorial will give generations to come a way to find out what happened on that day,” Sherri Blevins said.
Officials hope to have the memorial monument completed by April 27th.
Construction will start on Monday morning.
“They have got a real ambitious schedule, because they want to have it done by the anniversary of the tornado, and everybody is working really hard on that. It’s a very ambitious thing to try for,” said Kamback.
“Even though it was a very, very sad time, and a very hard time, I think it has truly brought our community closer together because we were able to get out and to work together on something to try and help others,” Blevins said.
Coordinators are accepting donations.
