HUNTSVILLE, Ala - With six months until Huntsville's municipal election, the race for mayor is getting interesting.
On Monday, former mayor Loretta Spencer officially announced her candidacy. Now current mayor Tommy Battle is weighing on his opponent.
Battle says, “Every four years you've got to go through an election, and you get to tell what you've done, you get to tell what you're going to do in the future, and that's part of the elective process."
The current mayor says he's ready for a re-match against Loretta Spencer. The 74 year-old lost her bid for a fourth term to Battle in 2008. And now, she says she's ready to take him on once again.
In a statement sent to WAAY 31 News, Spencer states: "This race is not about the past; it's about the future. There is only one reason that I'm running for Mayor - I love our Huntsville."
Battle says he's prepared for the challenge. But, he feels this re-match will be different, since he now has a record to run on. As an example, he states, “The AAA rating is just one of those accomplishments that only 30 communities across the nation have been able to do, so that's one I'm very proud of."
Spencer also plans to cite her achievements as mayor, and isn't afraid to point out flaws in the current administration. She explains, "I am committed to unveiling a number of policy proposals over the next few months. When my opponent is to be commended, I will do so. When voters need to know shortcomings, I'll point that out, too."
Spencer and Battle will face off in the municipal election this August.
