The mission of the Rocket City Space Pioneers team is to win the Google Lunar X Prize. The international competition to safely land a robot on the surface of the Moon, travel 500 meters over the lunar surface and send images back to earth. The first privately funded group to do so before the deadline, wins $30 million dollars.
The team is made up of representatives from companies including Dynetics, Siemens, The U.S. Space and Rocket Center and UAHuntsville. The team is looking for a name for their lunar lander and is getting area fourth graders involved.
Fourth grade teachers can register their class online at
www.rocketcityspacepioneers.com until February 15th, at 10 a.m.
Name submissions will be accepted from the 15th until the 22nd at 3 p.m.
The winner will be announced in early march.
The winning class will receive a trip to Space Camp and the teacher will get a $500 gift card for classroom supplies.
