Huntsville, AL -- Five years ago, Pastor David Thew founded Sojourn Church in Downtown Huntsville. In those days, the congregation worshiped inside Old Towne Brewery. Pastor Thew says, "Though we love traditional churches, there's a lot of people that would never set foot into a traditional space, so being in a brewery allowed for us to... say, hey come see who Christ is." But then, in July 2007, the brewery burned down.
The church was without a permanent home for several years before moving into the new brewery on Leeman Ferry Road. Still, Pastor Thew says that location never seemed quite right. "We didn't feel that where we were on Leeman Ferry was where we were supposed to gather... we prayed and just connections were made in a pretty miraculous way that connected us with Big Spring Partners," he says.
Big Spring Partners, a non-profit agency dedicated to revitalizing Downtown Huntsville, offered the church space in the historic First National Bank building on Westside Square. Now, worshipers gather inside the lobby at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Sundays. Pastor Thew says all are welcome, adding, "We love people no matter what, if they're educated or not educated, whether they're white collar or blue collar, live in a mansion or homeless because we just feel that's who Christ is."
