Tuscaloosa, AL - The Madison Academy Mustangs were unable to answer a fourth quarter comeback staged by Handley in the state 3A Championship game Thursday.
Mad-Acad struck first with Kerryon Johnson hit the end zone after an 11 yard run halfway through the first quarter. Handley answered with an impressive run of their own by Duran Zachary in the second. The teams went into the half, tied at 7.
Madison Academy retook the lead with another impressive 24 yard run by Johnson, but after that it was all Handley. Another Duran Zachary touchdown put the Handley team within one (the two point conversion attempt was snuffed out by the Mustangs defense), but Handley recovered an onside kick and drove to the end zone, scoring the go-ahead touchdown with just 42 seconds left in the game.
Madison Academy put together a good drive in the final seconds, but the game ended with a pass to the endzone being caught out of bounds.
