Huntsville, AL - The Huntsville Depot is certainly "historic". Just some of the famous faces who passed through the depot include Robert E. Lee, Helen Keller, and baseball great Ty Cobb.
"It is one of the oldest railroad structures in the country, and played a pivotal role in the civil war," said Bart Williams, Executive Director of the Early Works Family of Museums.
Built in 1860, just two years later it was captured by Union Troops during the Civil War.
"General Mitchel was the Union General that commanded the troops that came into Huntsville on April 11th of 1862, so we are coming up on the 150 year commemoration of that.
"It's said that in these rooms, confederate soldiers were housed as prisoners. You can see some of the graffiti and come up and look at it."
There are so many great did you knows? in the Historic Huntsville Depot, including the fact the President Teddy Roosevelt made at stop at the depot on his famous Whistlestop Tour.
"We try to tell Huntsville's story here from the Civil War through today."
You've got a lot of little things that happened first in this building. This was the first sealed concrete floor. The first indoor plumbing in a public structure. It was also one of the largest buildings when it was built in Huntsville."
