Are you a proud native Alabamian? Or, do you hail from another part of the country or the world? According to a recent survey, where you live now may tell us a lot about where you're from.

Are you a native Alabamian? If so you've got plenty of homegrown company throughout the heart of dixie, but not in Huntsville......more on that in a moment.

An estimated seventy percent of today's Alabamians were born here, that's the tenth-highest percentage among all fifty states.

Governing Magazine researchers compiled "homegrown" percentages for states and cities, using Census Bureau data from 2010. Homegrown means you reside in the state you were born. Their analysis showed that the Deep South and the Midwestern Rust Belt have the largest percentages of homegrown residents.
Louisiana tops the list at close to 79 percent. Tennessee your at 61 percent. By contrast some of the lowest percentages of homegrown residents come from out west. Arizona's at 37, Nevada at just 24.

Speaking of contrasts, a huge difference among 2 cities within the state of Alabama. Birmingham's homegrown population ranks fourth-highest in the U.S., at close to eighty percent.  Huntsville has the lowest number of natives in the state. 53 percent of the people who live in the Rocket City were not born in the area, and for folks over the age of 25 that percentage drops all the way to 45. That's pretty close to the 43 percent of a sprawling metropolis like Dallas, Texas.
