Huntsville, AL - Over the last 25-years, many folks around huntsville have gotten used to seeing a certain "structure." But, there's a lot more to it than meets the eye.
You can see it from all over Huntsville.
"When it went up, it was the tallest prefabricated steeple or tower that belonged to a church in the world," said Pastor David Hull of First Baptist Church of Huntsville.
In fact by my research it still is, reaching 229 feet into the Huntsville skyline. The tower at First Baptist Church of Huntsville will celebrate 25 years this July. Made of Steele, Aluminum and Zinc this structure is rooted 50 feet down in the ground. In 1990 it was listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest prefabricated steeple in the world.
"Because it's so tall it needed to be anchored that deep in the ground. So that represents for us how we build our lives on the foundation of Jesus Christ."
"We've talked a little bit about the structure of the tower and that you can see it from all over Huntsville, but did you know it's actually a functioning carillon tower, carillon as in bell.
"It's a musical intrument, you can go up in it."
"The person who plays the carillon goes up in the tower and plays every Sunday before and after worship. So it actually is an instrument used to proclaim the Good News."
