Athens, AL – An Athens school board member is free on bond after being arrested for driving drunk driving in the middle of the afternoon, just about the hour that school children head home on any given day.
At around 3:30 Tuesday afternoon, several witnesses saw a van run over a stop sign on Lucas Ferry Road in Athens. They called police and followed the van until the driver pulled into a driveway on Jeffery Road. Witnesses waited there until officers arrived at the scene.
Athens Police then arrested 56 year-old Larry Keenum for driving under the influence, after they say he failed a field sobriety test.
At the time, his blood alcohol content was almost three times the legal limit. Athens Police Lt. Trevor Harris says, “Once we got him to the police department, through the process of booking he was given a chemical breath test, and he tested .21 blood alcohol.”
According to our news partner, the Decatur Daily, the Athens City Council appointed Keenum to the board in 2006. His term ends this month, and he has applied for re-appointment.
WAAY 31 has contacted Keenum and Athens School Superintendent Dr. Orman Bridges. Neither has commented on the case.
Athens Police says Keenum does not have a history of prior arrests. His first court appearance is scheduled for May 12th.
