Caylor Stepping Down; New Contender Running for Spot

Posted:

A big announcement from a former Huntsville educator.

Mary Jane Caylor says she's not running for a fourth term on the State Board of Education.

Caylor began her education career in 1962.

She was a teacher at East Clinton Elementary School, and later went on to become the superintendent of Huntsville City Schools.

She's been on the state board of education since 1995.

In the meantime, Mary Scott Hunter announced today that she's running for Caylor's seat.

Hunter is a Huntsville attorney.

She says she feels strongly about continuing the Alabama reading initiative.

"The initiative has been the envy of many other states. In fact, I know we've had other states that have come and looked at ours. In the unprecedented times we are in, with the funding crisis, and just keeping it going at the level it's been going is going to be something we're going to have to be vigilant about," Hunter says.

Hunter is no stranger to politics.

You might remember last spring, she ran for Senate District 7.

That's the seat Parker Griffith ended up winning.
