MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Several parents of Memphis City Schools students can have charges against them dropped if they comply with court orders regarding their children's truancy.
The Commercial Appeal reported Judge Loyce Lambert Ryan agreed Monday to place 12 women on diversion. The misdemeanor charges against them will be expunged if they take parenting classes and their middle school-age children are paired with adult mentors.
Prosecutor Bill Gibbons cited 19 parents into court after repeated absences by their children.
Two other mothers asked for attorneys and will return to court in January. Five others cited for their children's truancy are yet to be served with citations.
The 19 parents who were cited last week had failed to respond to notices about their children not attending school.
