Tammy Silas was in a Nashville court room Monday to plead not guilty to kidnapping charges against her. Now, we're learning more about her side of the story.
Silas sent a letter to Nashville T-V station WTVF this week, where she says that she didn't kidnap 2 day old Yair Carillo, but instead arranged to buy the newborn for $25,000. According to the letter, she gave the money "to the mom, dad and another person that was the middle man". She also says she bought the child to love, and never meant to hurt him.
This isn't the first time that accusations like this have come out in this case. Shortly after the baby was found in Ardmore, and returned to his mother, police in Nashville seized the child and two siblings while they investigated claims that the boy was being sold. Those accusations were quickly dismissed and the child was returned. Police say they don't think the child's parents were involved in the kidnapping case, but they still consider it to be an open investigation.
WTVF's Nick Beres is reporting that the letter is consistent with what some investigators believe - that Silas cut a deal to buy the baby, and that she is not the one who attacked the mother and kidnapped the child.
Silas is awaiting trial and could face life in prison if convicted.
