Past blast: Foley residents open 1976 time capsule

Associated Press - November 11, 2009 5:04 AM ET

FOLEY, Ala. (AP) - Foley officials have opened a 33-year-old time capsule as part of the Baldwin County Bicentennial celebration.

The capsule was sealed in 1976 during celebrations for America's 200th birthday. The 6-foot plastic cylinder includes letters from residents to their children, coins, photos, brochures and many items from the U.S. bicentennial.

The Press Register reports Tuesday the items will go on display at the Foley Museum and Archives building. Officials have not set a date for the exhibit to open.

City Councilman Wayne Trawick, who presided over the opening ceremony, said family members who had items in the capsule can request the material, and copies will be placed on exhibit.

He said other items removed included a Baldwin County commemorative book from the U.S. bicentennial, along with a patch and coin.
