U.S. House of Representatives Vote in Favor of Heath Care

Posted:

The U.S. House of Representatives voted late Saturday evening to pass their version of a health care reform bill. The vote was 220 “Yes” versus 215 “No”. The vote was predominately along party lines; however, 1 Republican, Representative Joseph Cao, voted in favor of the bill’s passage while 39 Democrats voted against it. This included Alabama District 5 Representative, Parker Griffith (D) and Tennessee District 4 Representative, Lincoln Davis (D).  In addition, Alabama District 4 Representative, Robert Aderholt (R) also voted “NO”.

Prior to the final vote, a movement from conservatives of both parties moved forward to impose restrictions on abortion coverage within insurance policies. The movement and unification lead to the passage of the Stupak Amendment to the legislation.

The passed legislation would require all Americans to have health insurance. For those who would not be able to afford it, federal subsidies would be made available. Fines would be levied for those defying the mandate.

The legislation also makes it illegal to deny coverage on the basis of pre-existing conditions. In addition, it would be illegal for insurance premiums to be higher based on the basis of gender or medical history.  The bill also includes a public option that would provide insurance coverage through the government.

The next step in the process will be for the U.S. Senate to begin debate on two separate bills that have passed out of committee. If they would pass one of the bills the two houses of Congress would then work together on a compromised bill.
