Memphis mayor halts euthanasia at animal shelter

Associated Press - November 5, 2009 7:45 AM ET

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Memphis Mayor AC Wharton has halted all euthanasians at the city's animal shelter while an investigation into animal starvation is completed.

The Commercial Appeal reported Wharton's order on Wednesday came about a week after Shelby County Sheriff's deputies raided the shelter on the first full day of Wharton's term in response to reports of abuse and maltreatment of animals.

The shelter had been euthanizing about 250 animals per week.

The investigation could take several months and no criminal charges would be filed until it is completed.
