A late night fire has gutted a furniture store in down town Muscle Shoals.

Emergency crews first got the call of a fire at the Clement Hill store on State Street around 8:00 Thursday night. As smoke engulfed much of the downtown area, more and more responders were called to the scene.

The building, which has also been a night club and a roller skating rink, is believed to be a total loss. The owners of the store were in the process of selling off their inventory and closing up shop, so there was less fuel for the fire than there might have ordinarily been.

The investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.
