East Tenn. coach resigns after alleged hazing

Associated Press - April 14, 2009 6:45 AM ET

CLINTON, Tenn. (AP) - An East Tennessee high girls' softball coach has resigned after a school probe of an initiation where freshmen players were made to stand seminude in a swimming pool.

Anderson County High School Principal Greg Deal says Heather Branum resigned her role as coach Monday but remains a special-education teacher at the school.

Deal says older players had five freshmen to wear only one article of clothing while standing in an in-ground pool for seven minutes. At the time in March, the team was at a spring break tournament at Myrtle Beach, S.C.

The Knoxville News Sentinel reports Branum said she was fully responsible for the incident in her resignation letter.
